2013 XTERRA World Championship Highlights from XTERRA TV on Vimeo.

WHAT IS XTERRA: The world’s premier off-road triathlon, combining a 1.5-kilometer (1-mile) rough water swim, a 30.4-kilometer (18.89-miles) mountain bike and a 9.5-kilometer (5.9 miles) trail run best described as a tropical roller-coaster ride through pineapple fields and forests.
WHO RACES IN MAUI: A capacity field of 800 athletes from 28 countries and 42 U.S. states including professionals and amateurs.
WHEN: The XTERRA World Championship starts at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 26, 2014.
WHERE: The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii, USA
WHY: The XTERRA World Championship race is the last in a series of nearly 100 off-road triathlon races held in 16 countries and 30+ U.S. States. The concept is to provide a bona-fide off-road world championship for amateur and pro athletes. For pros there is $105,000 in prize money at stake. Amateurs race for the title of XTERRA World Champion. Also, the fastest male and female age group swim time (from start to timing station between beach exit and T1) receive a XTERRA Vortex Full wetsuit.
SWIM DISTANCE: 1.5-kilometers (0.93 miles)
MOUNTAIN BIKE DISTANCE: 32 Kilometers (20 miles) on the slopes of the West Maui Mountains
TRAIL RUN DISTANCE: 10 Kilometers (6.1 miles)

XTERRA WetsuitsSTART AND SWIM: The race starts with a 1.5-kilometer rough water swim at D.T. Fleming Beach fronting the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua; and will feature wave starts beginning with pro men and women, followed by age group men, then age group women

WAVE SWIM STARTS
There will be wave starts for this year’s race starting with pro men and women, then all age group men, then all age group women. We have tentatively set one-minute intervals between waves. Also, be aware that there could be high surf at the swim beach. We recommend you practice swimming in and out of the surf break before raceday.

XTERRA follows ITU rules regarding wetsuits and speedsuits.
NO WETSUITS ALLOWED for PROS and AGE GROUPERS.
SPEED SUITS or SKIN SUITS ARE PERMITTED.

AID STATIONS
Bike bottles will be available on course – option of water or Gatorade - at two exchange locations at roughly mile 8 and mile 15. PowerBar gels will be available as well. There will be five aid stations on the run, each roughly a mile apart, serving water, Gatorade and PowerBar gels.

BIKE: The bike is one big 20-mile loop with 3,300-feet of climbing that goes up-and-down the lower slopes of the West Maui Mountains more than a dozen times. This year several technical single and double track sections have replaced dirt jeep roads. “The new stuff has tight, twisting, sharp corners, space just wide enough for your handlebars, places if you don’t get it right you’ll hit your shoulder on a tree,” said race director Dave Nicholas. “Almost all of the dirt roads have been eliminated on the way to the top and this will appeal to the better bikers. At about the five-mile mark you will pop out on a narrow ridge trail with hundred foot drop offs on either side. Don’t panic – the top is at least 15’ wide and the views of the surrounding forest and hills are simply spectacular. If I didn’t fall off – neither will you. In fact, if you come early and preview the course, bring your camera with you. The scenery is something that not many people get a chance to see.”

Tire Choice:
Here is some advice from our elite racer Ben Allen on tires: A fast tread xc tire is the best with clingy edges. Maxxis ikon or Schwalbe racing Ralph are very good. Also WTB wolverine is a great tire too. These tires offer a fast rolling moderately spaced tread pattern that combines plentiful working edges that cling to hard packed surfaces and the outside knobs that let you shred the sandy & grassy corners. Top three tire brands specifically for Maui: Maxxis, Schwalbe, WTB.
Leilani's On The BeachRUN: Once on the 10K run competitors will be faced with a whole lot of climbing while they weave along dirt trails, through Oleander forests, and into 60-foot high ironwood evergreens to an unexpected mountain lake at the 700-foot level. “It descends like a slalom course through high green Bermuda grasses and opens up in spots to expose fantastic views of the Pacific,” said Nicholas. “Obstacles are everywhere, including a technical, steep downhill into a gully where racers will have to jump over and duck under fallen trees, navigate a rocky dry creek, head through thick elephant grass, up a short rope-assisted scramble and along a narrow single track trail with switchbacks that drop all the way down to the beach. The final test of skill and endurance is a calf-busting 250-meter sandy beach run.”
Fastest male and female pro, age group, and Maui resident run times will receive a $100 gift certificate from Leilani's On the Beach.
NEW FOR 2014: GUARANTEEED 2015 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SLOT FOR AGE GROUP WINNERS

All Age Group Winners in all divisions will be guaranteed a slot to the 2015 XTERRA World Championship to defend their titles.
