Cannondale CAAD 10 - First Ride - Cycling Plus November 10 Issue
7 days ago
As carbon continues to be the frame material of the moment, are aluminium's days numbered? Cannondale certainly doesn't thing so...

Carbon fibre dominated at Eurobike, as you'd expect, but that doesn’t mean road bikes only come in composite. Cannondale, while following the carbon route, has also been proving for the past quarter of a century that there’s plenty of life in aluminium, and the 2011 CAAD10 aims to continue doing just that.

It’s got a hard act to follow, since we raved about the CAAD9 – that’s Cannondale Advanced Aluminium Design by the way – when we tested it in issue 232, but our initial ride points to real improvement.

For the weight weenies, the most important number will be the 200g Cannondale says it’s saved over the CAAD9 – giving a frame weight a packet-of-crisps over 1kg. It’s achieved this by reshaping the tubeset, bulking up in areas of stress but paring down in less critical areas.

The most noticeable aesthetic differences over the CAAD9 come where the beefy hydroformed – shaped at room temperature using fluid – down-tube flares to meet the head-tube. Here sits an ovalised top-tube that, says Cannondale, better resists lateral stresses, and a flatter, over seat-tube where it meets the BB30 bottom bracket.

The chainstays are different too – they now use the shock absorbing ‘organic’ SAVE shape seen on the brand’s Synapse range. There’s also a newly tapered 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 inch head-tube that surrounds a new all-carbon fork, and which Cannondale says is as strong as the company’s earlier 1 1/8 to 1 1/2 inch models.

All well and good, but with the range-topping CAAD10 costing £2499, it’ll be up against some stonking carbon machines. But here’s the thing; the short time we spent on the CAAD10 left us thinking it’s likely to be a contender. For a start, a Shimano Dura-Ace groupset and Shimano RS80 wheels are still rare on a £2.5k carbon bike.

Equipment aside, though, it was the ride that impressed most. We were swapping between bikes – every other one a composite, natch – and the CAAD10 didn’t show itself up. Anything but. Light, nimble, responsive and comfortable from the off. Our first impression is that the Cannondale deserves to be on test ride shortlists next year for anyone looking for a serious road machine. That the 10 will also come in an Ultegra build at £1899 and CAAD10 150 configuration at £1299 means it’s a bike that should have broad appeal.
